Crusaders Drill Team and Drumline is made up of young people, ages 5 to 25. All of them are active members of their home church, serving as choir members, ushers, Sunday School students or praise dancers.
In past seasons, Crusaders have appeared all over the Midwest in parades, performances and contests, including the 2019 Gateway Competition in Kansas City, KS, where they took first place. The Crusaders went on to win more over the course of time, including 2nd place overall, and 1st place Drumline in last year’s MATD contest.

Welcome to the Western Stars Drill Team and Drum Line under the direction of the dynamic mother-daughter duo Shawn & Dionna Rodgers. Since our inception in 1979, we have been a dynamic and integral part of the Dayton, Ohio community. Founded by the visionary Janet Fletcher and Liz, our team began with a bold mission: to bring excellence and enthusiasm to the art of drill and percussion.
Our History
Originally established with the vibrant colors of purple and white, our home began at Westwood Recreation Center. This community center was a fusion of activities, offering everything from ceramics and boxing to basketball, aerobics, and karate. It was within this creative and energetic environment that the Western Stars Drill Team and Drum Line first began to shine.
Our Journey
Over the years, the Western Stars have expanded far beyond our local roots. We have proudly represented our organization in numerous states across the country, showcasing our talent and dedication in locations such as Las Vegas, Orlando, Chicago, Kansas City, St. Louis, Atlanta, Nebraska, Ohio, New Orleans, California and more. Each performance is a testament to our hard work, teamwork, and passion for the craft.
Honoring Our Legacy
We extend our deepest gratitude to the individuals who helped pave the way for our success. The late Ms. Moon, late Ms. Arletha and Ms. Toliver played pivotal roles in securing funding, establishing city partnerships, and fueling our passion. Their dedication and vision were instrumental in shaping our team’s journey. Their impact continues to resonate with us, and their legacy lives on through every performance and achievement of the Western Stars.
From our humble beginnings in the Westwood Recreation Center to national competitions and performances, the Western Stars Drill Team and Drum Line have grown into a cherished organization in our community. Our legacy is built on a foundation of commitment, community, creativity, and a deep love for drill and percussion.
